Medium, I Still Don’t Understand Your Like System

3 years on the platform and I still don’t understand what Medium is looking to achieve with their Like System.
You can click up to 50 times on the like button but what does it represent? Is this supposed to measure how much I like a certain piece?
What about the receiving end of it? There are a lot of individuals who suffer from analytics and the dopamine the “Like” generates. Do they feel more or less rewarded?
Yes, I got 50 likes! Oh, it’s only from one person…
Does this mean that they really enjoyed the article? What if they left only 1 like, does it mean that the article needs some polishing?
The answer I seem to find is always “Maybe”.
I personally try to leave all 50 likes on every piece I enjoy reading, but I’d rather click only once.
